Join us for a fun and festive evening to support science education in your community. This lively and costume filled event will be sure to delight! This year’s theme is based around our 2015 summer exhibit Sherlock Holmes and the event attire – for those who want to venture away from the basic cocktail dress or standard suit – is Sleuth Chic or Steampunk.

For anyone who’s saying “what is Steampunk” it is a literary genre, as well as a burgeoning sub-culture that young and old alike embrace with costumes, gadgets, and more. The idea centers on combining Victorian Era motifs with modern or futuristic technology.

Sherlock Holmes, as originally written by Arthur Conan Doyle, is as much a founding father of Steampunk as Jules Vern, H.G. Wells, Mary Shelley and Charles Darwin. These writers, along with Doyle, were among the first to create characters (or in Darwin’s case – theories) who willfully remove themselves from their accepted place in society and say “I am more than the caste I was born into. My intelligence trumps my bloodline. I can take on the world and nature with my knowledge, insight and inventions.” No fear. No limits. Give me more adventure – please! That philosophy is quintessentially Steampunk.

Looking for some visual inspiration? Check out some of our costume images below and check out last year’s photobook of the 2013 Gala to see what guests have done in the past. Don’t be afraid to think “outside the cube” when it comes to your costume. Have a favorite Clue character? Love Scooby-Do or the Pink Panther as a child? Always wanted to be Magnum P.I.? Get creative!
