Celebrate Earth: An Eco Friendly Affair
Bank of America and Orange County Supervisor Bill Campbell to be honored with Arnold O. Beckman Award on Saturday, Sept. 25
SANTA ANA, Calif. – September (day) 2010 – Nearly 400 Orange County business and community leaders will gather Saturday evening, Sept. 25, for the most playful philanthropic event of the year: Taco Bell Discovery Science Center’s annual gala. Celebrate Earth: An Eco Friendly Affair will continue the unique Southern California science resource’s second decade of operations.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the impact we have had at Discovery Science Center and in classrooms throughout southern California. Thanks to the leadership of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and OC Waste & Recycling, we are excited to create two new waste, recycling and environmental exhibits opening in summer 2011,” said Joe Adams, president of Discovery Science Center. This is the first in a series of environmental exhibits that will combine the study of natural science with preservation, demonstration, and education programs that interpret land, water, and air.
Bank of America and Orange County Supervisor Bill Campbell to receive prestigious Arnold O. Beckman Award
The late Dr. Arnold O. Beckman is recognized worldwide as a scientist, inventor, educator, philanthropist and leader in business and civic life. This award is presented to individuals and organizations that demonstrate outstanding leadership, generosity and vision in meeting the critical need to engage and educate children with science, technology and math, and play a vital role in helping to advance Discovery Science Center and its important mission.
Honoring Bank of America
This year, Discovery Science Center is presenting this award to Bank of America our corporate honoree, which is one of the Science Center’s founding Platinum Corporate Partners. Through their support, the Science Center has launched the Making the Grade program and most recently, the new Planetary Research Station exhibit. In addition to nationally providing $200 million annually in grants, Bank of America associates are providing one million volunteer hours in their communities.
Bank of America is committed to providing impactful local support, ranging from economic investments into underserved communities to philanthropy for nonprofits providing arts and cultural education, environmental opportunities, home retention programs, financial literacy, and social support services.
Honoring Orange County Supervisor Bill Campbell
Our individual honoree, Orange County Supervisor Bill Campbell will be recognized for his community leadership and his vision of engaging youth in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education from a very early age. Through his leadership on the Board of Supervisors and service on numerous boards, commissions and advisory councils, Supervisor Campbell is building relationships and knowledge that bring partners together to accomplish projects that have a tremendous, positive impact for the people of Orange County.
“Bill Campbell’s leadership and support from the very beginning have been instrumental in our success. We are fortunate to have such dedicated corporate support from Bank of America. Community and corporate leaders are our true catalysts for education and inspiration,” Joe Adams, president of Discovery Science Center, said.
Bill Campbell was first elected to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Third District, in January 2003. Prior to that, Supervisor Campbell served in the California Legislature as an Assembly Member from 1996 to 2002.
Eco Chic Never Looked So Good
On Saturday, Sept. 25, guests will arrive for a cocktail reception set among the exhibit floors of Discovery Science Center. Exhibits will be active for this part of the evening, which is designed to give guests a look at the hands-on science activities and exhibits that school children experience.
A crowd favorite this year will be the new permanent exhibits featured in the Space Exploration Gallery. Part of this new addition is Boeing Rocket Lab, featuring a real RS-68 rocket engine and virtual blast off zone. Another permanent addition to the exhibit floor is NASA Explores the Universe featuring a full size replica of the Mars Curiosity rover, and Planetary Research Station presented by Bank of America. With over five hundred data sets, Planetary Research Station projects images of air, land, sea, and space. Data sets range from infrared satellite images over land, to air traffic control flight paths, to the topography of Venus.
Guests will then enter a tented pavilion transformed to showcase the earth and our environment and enjoy an elegant dinner provided by Turnip Rose Elite Catering. Gala committee co-chairs are Mary and Jack Norberg. Following dinner, award program, and a live auction led by the talented Tim Kashani, guests will groove the night away to the musical group, Paperback Writer, a Beatles tribute sensation.
All Gala proceeds will support the Education Fund which will continue to provide high quality science programming for which Discovery Science Center is known as well as scholarships for low income students.
