Field Trips to the Science Center

Explore hands-on science exhibits while completing an Activity Booklet to share back at school. Compare rocks, minerals, and soil under our microscopes. Learn how an object’s motion can be described by its change in position over time at our Science of Hockey, Friction Table and Gravity Well. Then participate in an educational demonstration: “Forces and Motion.” Standards: [PS1-a, b, c, d, f, g; LS-2a, d; ES-3a, b, c, d – pgs 5-6]

November is 2nd Grade Month! Explore Fossil Footprints & Solve a Dino Puzzle

Students will solve mysteries as they investigate footprints and piece together a miniature "dinosaur bone" model. Standards: [LS 2a,c; ES 3d]

Fossil Safari With the Irvine Ranch Conservancy

Unearth extinct prehistoric mammals in the "wilds" of the Irvine Ranch Land Reserve. Appropriate and safe for 2nd and 3rd grade students, this exciting hands-on simulated fossil dig containing Saber-toothed cats, Dire wolves, Giant Ground sloths, and more, will teach students about fossils, extinction, and animal design. Can you dig it? Yes, you can! Standards [ES 3d] Cost: $11.50 per student.

“Science to Go” - Programs at Your School

Science to Go programs are held at your school and taught by Discovery Science Center staff. They are 50 minutes in length and align with California Science Content Standards.

Planetarium Starlab

Starlab, our portable planetarium, is designed to surround your students with the universe. Science, literature, and history are integrated into this daytime study of nighttime stars. Starlab can be set up in any 18’ X 25’ room with a 12-foot ceiling.

Forces and Motion

Students will use ramps, balls, measuring tapes, and a variety of materials with which to experiment. The concepts of forces, motion, inertia, and gravity are taught during this hands-on lesson. Standards: PS 1 a – e, pg 5]

Science Rocks!

Investigate the physical properties of rocks, along with a study of erosion and weathering. An explanation of the rock cycle includes making a rock board and comparing soil samples. Standards: [ES-3a, b, c - pg. 6]

Fossils

Make a replica of a fossil, sort fossilized sharks’ teeth, and discover which animals may have lived in your own backyard long, long ago during this interactive lesson on California’s past. Standards: [ES-3d - pg. 6]

Assemblies at Your School

Assemblies are 50 minutes in length and can be adapted to any age audience. We have identified the California Science Content Standards for specific age groups.

Motion Commotion

Experience the awesome power of physics as we explore forces and energy. Overcome gravity using air pressure, see your voice , brave the pendulum wrecking ball and much more. This action-packed assembly is sure to blow you away! [PS 1c, d, e, g]

Watt’s Current

An electrifying demonstration awaits you! Observe the power of electricity and learn about electrical circuits as a Science Center staff member operates a Tesla coil and an electrostatic generator. It is sure to make your hair stand on end! Students are invited to participate during this energy-filled presentation of electricity.

Reaction Lab

Uncover the mysteries of chemical reactions as students participate in some amazing demonstrations that are sure to kep them on the edge of their seats. Color-changing chemicals, extreme temperatures and glowing concoctions are a few of the many chemical reactions we will explore. Standards: [PS 1b - pg 3]
