Species Recovery Center

Explore endangered animal species, including some species that face extinction, in this hands-on exhibit area. Learn about the often drastic measures and techniques used by rescuers to capture the animals from the wild, breed and raise the young, and ultimately release these endangered animals back into their natural habitats. Hear the stories of eight endangered species from around the world at exhibit stations with mechanical and computer interactives, videos, large colorful photographs and touchable models.

Return to the Wild

This zone features the compelling stories of people who are dedicating their lives to saving individual animals and, ultimately, entire species. Immerse yourself in a video that ventures into orphanages that house elephants and orangutans. Learn the importance of understanding the natural adaptations and behaviors of the animals in order for their caregivers to provide appropriate care to them.

Emergency Response Center

The Emergency Response area presents stories of disasters that affect wildlife and our modes of response to them. Use the tools and techniques of veterinary medicine to learn how wild animals are diagnosed and treated. Operate an x-ray machine and diagnose the injury, measure the heart rate of mammals, suture a turtle shell, and watch videos of innovative surgery techniques.

Then, play a multi-player quiz and take on the role of the emergency responder to decide how to deploy volunteers and supplies to the scene of a disaster. At the Seabird Rescue Station, delve deeper into the science related to the effects of oil spills on wildlife, and learn how oil-covered birds are being successfully rehabilitated.

Home Front

Discover how our everyday actions can have an impact on wildlife in our own backyard and ultimately on the biodiversity of Earth. Learn about the different components of the biosphere – the habitats, the animals, and our entire planet – to understand the significance of biodiversity and its impact on Earth. Finally, make your commitment to carrying through with specific actions in your everyday life by registering your vote at the “What Will I Do?” exhibit.
