Planetarium Starlab Starlab, our portable planetarium, is designed to surround your students with the universe. Science, literature, and history are integrated into this daytime study of nighttime stars. Starlab can be set up in any 18’ X 25’ room with a 12-foot ceiling. Cost is $7.50 per student for the first program and $6.75 per student for additional presentations that occur on the same date. (Effective 9/1/08) Buzzy Bees
Students investigate the fascinating world of insects as they look at the external body parts of bees and discover some of their amazing adaptations. The class concludes with the students making a take-home buzzing bee toy. Plants and You
This hands-on, multi-sensory program enhances the students’ understanding of the parts and functions of plants. Among other activities, the students will plant seeds and explore herbs. Owls Are a Hoot!
Students will explore the nocturnal owl, including a close-up look at their feathers and feet. Other activities include taking apart owl pellets and identifying bones to learn what owls eat. Weather and the Three Forms of Water
This interactive program focuses on weather, the water cycle, and the solid, liquid and gaseous form of water. Find out how temperature and air pressure affect the water cycle. Students will make a water cycle headband. Forces and Motion
Students will use ramps, balls, measuring tapes, and a variety of materials with which to experiment. The concepts of forces, motion, inertia, and gravity are taught during this hands-on lesson. Science Rocks!
Investigate the physical properties of rocks, along with a study of erosion and weathering. An explanation of the rock cycle includes making a rock board and comparing soil samples. Magnetism
Students learn about temporary and permanent of magnets and how they are used. Observe magnetic attraction and repulsion in motors. Students make their own electro-magnet! Electrical Circuits
Create a simple circuit. Design and build other circuits using components such as wires, batteries, bulbs, and speakers. Search for Life in the Universe
Watch a 3-D multi-media presentation that focuses on the Search for Life in the Universe. This unique program discusses current research and NASA missions designed to discover if we are not alone in the universe (or even our solar system!) Call Dr. Neil Campbell for more information at 714-536-3258 or send him an e-mail. Weather
Students study ocean currents, atmosphere, and how air pressure and temperature affect the weather. Forensic Science
5-week science course 1 hour per week for a total of five weeks $45 per student for the course includes materials and journals for the recording of information and experiences. |

| | Cow Eye Dissection Perform an eye dissection guided by trained Science Center staff. Students will compare the cow eye to the human eye while examining the parts of the eye and their functions. |
Circuits and Switches Study electrical circuits by making a “take home” model that demonstrates how switches work. Fossils
Understand how changes in the environment caused some living things to become extinct. Make a replica of a fossil, sort fossilized sharks’ teeth, and discover which animals may have lived in your own backyard long, long ago during this interactive lesson on California’s past. Magnetism
Students learn about the different types of magnets. Investigate how temporary and permanent magnets are used. Make your own electro-magnet! Electric Motors
Students make the connection between electricity and magnetism as they explore electromagnetic fields and build their own electric motor to take home. Chemistry of Polymers
Increase your understanding of polymers by dissecting a disposable diaper, making latex balls, and concocting slime.
Plate Tectonics Study the layers of the Earth. Learn the mechanics of convection currents and their influence on plate tectonics and major geological events. Explore the seismology of California during this hands-on educational workshop. Pig Heart Dissection
Conduct a heart dissection guided by trained Science Center staff. Students will compare the pig heart to the human heart while mapping the chambers of the heart and tracing the blood’s pathway through the circulatory system. |
