Women Explorers Participants

Learning about Tornados

NOAA Meteorologists Jamie Meier and Stefanie Sullivan visited Taco Bell Discovery Science Center on Saturday, Jan. 24, to participate in the new Women Explorers program.

Girls Creating a TornadoA public lecture on their academic paths and careers in meteorology was held in Discovery Theater at 11 a.m. This was followed by a hands-on workshop during which girls age 10 to 13 made vortexes inside of two liter bottles of water, simulating the action of a tornado. Meier and Sullivan related the activity to local weather with their talk, “Really, there are tornados in Southern California.” The girls found out that California averages 7 tornados a year, and most of them occur in Southern California! The event concluded with a luncheon, where girls could ask questions of the meteorologists and get to know each other a little better.

More Women Explorer workshops are planned. Register Here!
