Wednesday Student Workshops

Each Wednesday in September, home school students can participate in interactive, hands-on student workshops. Each one-hour workshop focuses on teaching science concepts through an engaging lesson and activity taught by a Science Center teacher.

  • Buzzy Bees – 9:00am-10:00am (grades K-2)
Your children will investigate the fascinating world of insects as they look at the external body parts of bees and discover some of their amazing adaptations. The workshop will conclude with your children making a take-home buzzing bee toy.
  • Polymers - 10:30am-11:30am (grades 3-5)
Your children will investigate the interesting, but slimy side of polymers by “growing” water-absorbing molecules, making “glowing” slime, and more.

  • Owls – 9:00am-10:00am (grades K-2)
Your children will explore the nocturnal owl including a close-up look at their feathers and feet. Other activities include taking apart owl pellets and identifying bones to learn what owls eat.
  • Circuits – 10:30am-11:30am (grades 3-5)
Your children will design and build circuits using components such as wires, batteries, bulbs, and speakers.
  • Forces & Motion – 1:30pm-2:30pm (grades K-2)
Your children will use ramps, balls, measuring tapes, and a variety of materials with which to experiment. The concepts of forces, motion, inertia, and gravity are taught during this hands-on lesson.
  • Pig Heart – 3:00pm-4:00pm (grades 3-5)
Your children will conduct a pig heart dissection guided by trained Science Center staff. They will compare the pig heart to the human heart while mapping the chambers of the heart and tracing the blood’s pathway through the circulatory system.
